Athlete Spotlight: Abbey Copenhaver

How long have you been a member of Team CHOCOLATE MILK?

1 year

What has been your greatest athletic accomplishment in 2017 so far?

I have a lot to be grateful for in 2017: Finishing my first full distance Ironman, meeting Miranda “Rinny” Carfrae and winning my age group at a sprint tri I was doing “just for fun” in August.

What is your favorite type of race/course?

I’m in love with 70.3 (or half distance) triathlons, it really seems to be the right distance for my body and training schedule.

What are your goals for the 2017 season?

I would like to focus on the 70.3 distance maybe doing two races, an Ironman 70.3 and local 70.3 (Musselman).

How many races did you participate in during August?

I was going to take August off! But I found myself doing a sprint tri (that was a birthday gift).

Why do you recover with chocolate milk after a tough workout or training session?

It’s easy to look forward to a cold and tasty chocolate milk post-workout, but the real reason I reach for chocolate milk is practical and science based. Juggling a crazy schedule like most athletes chocolate milk is convenient and cost effective. The carb-to-protein ratio is perfect for muscle recovery whether it’s post a long run or double workout. In addition, the vitamins, minerals and fluid replaces what I lost during my workout.

When did you begin recovering with chocolate milk?

I grew up a farm girl so I began looking forward to chocolate milk after a long day on the farm at an early age. Chocolate milk became a key part of my athletic nutrition plan when I moved to half marathon distance training in 2012.

What is your favorite part of racing marathons and triathlons?

The friendship. I got into racing because of friends and family, and in return I’ve gotten more friends and family into racing. Runner and tri communities are extremely supportive and I love meeting new people and “talking shop” about race and training life.

Share a fun fact about yourself!

I’m a proud and crazy dog mom! Leah, my yellow lab is my pride and joy! Although her short and husky build doesn’t bode well for long runs, she loves to join me for runs of the bike and a few 5K races! We’re still working on the swimming thing.
